We are SO HONORED to capture this new exciting time in your life. Our goal is to produce images that feel like day-to-day interactions with your new little one.
Below are TEN TIPS to start planning your session. Each tip is really IMPORTANT, so please allow yourselves PLENTY of time to plan this session, so you’re not stressed and scrambling the week of your due date! 🙂
#1 – WHEN to schedule your session:
Within 5-10 DAYS of your baby’s birth is best. (Earlier the BETTER!) We want your little one as sleepy and calm as possible.
#2 – WHERE will we be shooting?
We’ll be shooting in your home, specifically in your nursery and master bedroom. If there is good light and/or big windows other places in your home, we may choose to shoot there too. (We DO NOT expect your house to be perfect!!! Don’t worry about cleaning anything other than just vacuuming – just RELAX!!)
#3 – Do you want lights and lamps on?
Nope! We want all the lights OFF, so we’re using clean, natural light. Artificial light casts yellow/orange tones on your skin, so we’ll turn off ALL the lights.
#4 – What TIME of day should I schedule the session?
Here’s a little homework: Turn off ALL THE LIGHTS, then start watching the light into your home – specifically in the nursery and master bedrooms. Keep track what time of day there’s a lot of light coming into each room, and let us know those times! We’ll make a decision based on your findings.
#5 – Do I need to borrow/buy new bedding?
A WHITE comforter on the master bed will look BEST. (Ask family/friends to borrow one, to save money!) Why??? If it’s a pink comforter, it will reflect PINK tones onto your face…if it’s a GREEN comforter, it will reflect green tones, etc. If you have neutral colored bedding, that is best.
#6 – What should I wear?
While we want this session to seem very “candid” and natural, wearing a dress is the MOST FLATTERING style on all mamas. We want you to feel BEAUTIFUL and in all positions, a LONG, FLOWY dress (or long flowy top with leggings) looks best. (Don’t pick anything tight or something that will make you self-conscious, because we’ll have you sitting and lounging on the bed.) Choose more neutral colors, (whites, creams, grays, really light pinks, etc.) because – just like the bedding issue – if you’re wearing a red dress, RED will reflect onto your baby’s face while you’re holding him/her! YIKES!!!! Also, everyone going barefoot looks GREAT and natural within the home.
a) What should my husband wear?
Ask your husband/partner to please wear neutral tones too. We don’t want his shirt reflecting bright colors onto your baby’s face either.
b) What should our baby wear?
Your baby can wear outfits, bloomers, accessories, headbands, etc. If you’re looking for something extra special, this website has GORGEOUS items: Sew Trendy!
#7 – What about the house temperature?
Your husband is going to cringe….but we need the house WARM. Crank that temperature up really high. Your little one needs to feel warm when he/she is out of your arms, in photographs alone. The warmer the house, the less your baby will realize they aren’t being held.
#8 – Can we incorporate PETS?
Yes! We love to add your furry children too. However, if your animal(s) are loud, we may ask them to be put in a different part of the house to not disturb your baby while we’re shooting without pets.
#9 – What about the day of the session?
FEED YOUR BABY MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE SESSION!!!! When we arrive, we’ll text your husband/partner to let us in the house to unpack, while you finish feeding. We want your baby happy and full for the session.
#10 – I’m a little stressed that my baby will cry!
Don’t worry! We’ll take breaks when needed so you can FEED and CHANGE your baby. It’s totally normal for a baby to get upset, and need calming down. Just make sure to budget for extra time (additional time over the included hour) if need be, so you don’t feel rushed.
We want to make this session a really special one for your family.
Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have ANY questions or concerns! We can’t WAIT to photograph you all!
